Avia to Raise Production of Trucks. This year it should be decided if it will also mount buses.
Avia of Letňany that was acquired half a year ago by the Indian Ashok Leyland Group slowly awakes. While it manufactured merely 580 trucks the last year, the current monthly production has achieved nearly 100 vehicles with estimated 1,400 by the end of the year. "This is a good start for achieving the aim of 5,000 vehicles a year by 2009," the executives claim. The period of Avia manufacturing only upon order due to lack of funding, counting delivery time in months, is over. The Indian people brought the funding and so the Company offers supplies from the store as well. At the same time, it began to invest in recovery of its sales network. In addition, the Indian managers have especially concentrated on alternative purchase of parts. Reportedly, the power of the parent company and its experience in the field of material purchase in cheaper countries has led to extreme decrease in costs. This fact, among others, will also allow Avia to realize the profit this year for the first time after a long period. Recently, the Czech manufacturers participate on the supply of parts by about 20 %. One half of the vehicles manufactured this year will find their customers in Czech and Slovak Republics. The second half will go to more distant markets with Ireland, UK, Hungary and Spain as the main customers for the time being. In the next years, the Indians plan to establish Avia vehicles in Baltic states and Eastern Europe. Africa will be not excluded; it will probably obtain vehicles fitted with Ashok Leyland motors. Vehicles exported to EU will continue with a Cummins motor. This year, the Indian concern plans to accept a strategy of penetration into the European bus market. They will be most probably mounted in Avia; however, no decision has been made so far. Currently, Avia Ashok Leyland has 265 employees. The number will grow up to 300 approximately. The average wages of production personnel make about CZK 27 thousand.
