Prague, 11th September 2008 – An honourable guest, Indian Minister of Commerce & Industry Kamal Nath, who arrived in the Czech Republic for an official visit on Wednesday, has visited Prague´s truck manufacturer Avia Ashok Leyland today.
The Minister Kamal Nath arrived at Prague´s Letňany in connection with the oncoming two-year anniversary, when in October 2006 Avia was bought by the giant Indian company Ashok Leyland Motors, the member of Hinduja Group, one of the largest investment groups in India.
Mr. Kamal Nath accompanied by the management representatives of Hinduja Group and Avia Ashok Leyland has taken a view of production operation and got acquainted with results and perspectives of the car company. Indian Minister emphasized traditionally good long-lasting relationships between India and the Czech Republic. At the same time Mr. Kamal Nath expressed his conviction that Indian-Czech cooperation can bilaterally develop to the mutual benefit of both countries due to growing potential of India in many areas, including industry and top technologies.
In the Letňany seat of the car company Avia Indian Minister simultaneously dedicated a new Product Showroom, which will help to develop business activities of the car company. Typical models of Avia offer, whose production programme covers the class of trucks of overall weight from 6,5 to 12 t, including air spring suspension, are exhibited here.
Ramaswami Seshasayee, Managing Director of the car company Ashok Leyland emphasized that gaining of Avia was for the Indian concern a strategic step on the entry to the most demanding markets of European Union. Ashok Leyland by means of Avia checks the situation on very harsh competitive European markets whereas Avia can fully use significant potential of the scientific research base of the concern for its further development.
Chief Operating Officer Marcus Pauels acquainted the honourable guest with the development of Avia Ashok Leyland make. In 2007 Avia sold on its European markets overall 713 trucks. 70% of sale falls on the markets of Central and Eastern Europe, 30 % falls on the advanced markets of European Union. 376 Avia trucks were sold from January to August 2008, whereas sales in western countries of European Union was negatively influenced by the substantial decrease of supplies to England due to failure of supplies of batteries by one of the customers, who is converting Avia vehicles into electro-vehicles. Further substantial reason for non-fulfillment of the anticipated export plans in Western Europe was disproportionate strengthening of Czech currency.
However, according to Marcus Pauels Avia is doing well on its domestic market in the Czech Republic, respectively in Slovakia. During this year´s eight months Avia sold 240 trucks, which is yoy more by 88 %. In August the share of Avia in the official records was 19%, which returns the car make among respected competition of western trucks. From January to August 51 vehicles were sold in Slovakia, i.e. yoy more by 65 %. As far as new markets are concerned, Avia managed to make right in the Ukraine, where 31 trucks out of planned 60 vehicles headed this year. There was successful entry into the market in Romania, where 19 vehicles out of 43 ordered vehicles were delivered. In the short term the entry into the Russian market is prepared.
According to Chief Operating Officer of the car manufacturer Avia controlling company Ashok Leyland Motors during past two years has invested into comprehensive development of Avia make more than 800 million CZK. Full-line effort to reduce costs with possible use of component deliveries from India is going on. In 2008 74 million CZK will be invested in further development of Avia vehicles. This year modern air spring suspension appeared in the offer, we are working on the improvement of the drive 4 x 4, on the finalization of the emission standard Euro 5 and on further increasing of safety parameters of the driver´s cab. Next 140 million CZK will be invested this year in general reconstruction of the equipment and premises and construction of a new steam-boiler plant.
