Prague/Bratislava – Truck manufacturer AVIA ASHOK LEYLAND MOTORS (AALM), based in Letnany, Prague, has won a lucrative governmental order in Slovakia. It has concluded an agreement for the supply at least 30 AVIA light trucks to the Slovak Ministry of Internal Affairs.

With the extension of the D range model up to an overall weight of 12 tons (D120) and with trailer up to 22 tons, the manufacturer from Letňany offers, in addition to the current parabolic suspension, a novelty: rear axle air spring suspension. Thus, AVIA becomes a part of the segment of vehicles which can also function well for long distance transportation.

AVIA’s home market, the Czech Republic, in 2007 was the most significant market with 272 vehicles sold. Great Britain was the second biggest market with 115 sales and the Slovak Republic in its wake with 114 numbers. Sales to Ireland resulted in 92 AVIA trucks being shipped across the Irish Sea last year.

This October AVIA broadened its range in N2 segment by introducing attractive and market-demanded car - a usable off road pursuing the EURO 4+ emission limits. It is a modernized version of D 120 in 4x4. As the name suggests this car, weighing up to 12 tons total, has front axle propulsion that can be switched off, i.e. 4x4.

Letňany truck manufacturers will increase production. Avia Ashok Leyland Motors will be back in all the markets that the letnany truck manufacturer had to leave in recent years. At the same time, it strives to penetrate completely new territories, such as Australia. According to Tomáš Navrátil, the Director General, the Company plans to sell at least 1,150 trucks (or ideally 1,400 trucks) this year. By the end of the year, it should reach the operational profit. In the recent years, the production usually stayed at 500 to 600 numbers, and the Company had to avert the danger of bankruptcy.

Avia to Raise Production of Trucks. This year it should be decided if it will also mount buses. Avia of Letňany that was acquired half a year ago by the Indian Ashok Leyland Group slowly awakes. While it manufactured merely 580 trucks the last year, the current monthly production has achieved nearly 100 vehicles with estimated 1,400 by the end of the year. "This is a good start for achieving the aim of 5,000 vehicles a year by 2009," the executives claim. The period of Avia manufacturing only upon order due to lack of funding, counting delivery time in months, is over.
